Thanksgiving Day!

Thanksgiving originated from a mix of European and Native American traditions. In Europe, festivals were held before and after the harvest cycles to give thanks for a good harvest, and to rejoice together after much hard work with the rest of the community. Native Americans also celebrated the end of a harvest season. When Europeans first arrived to the Americas, they brought with them their own harvest festival traditions from Europe, celebrating their safe voyage, peace and good harvest.

Robert Burns Night

Burns Night is annually celebrated in Scotland on or around January 25. It commemorates the life of the bard (poet) Robert Burns, who was born on January 25, 1759. The day also celebrates Burns' contribution to Scottish culture. Burns' best known work is "Auld Lang Syne". Many hold a "Burns' supper" on or near this night, with toasts and readings of his poetry. The evening may center on the entrance of the haggis on a platter to the sound of bagpipes. When the haggis is on the table, the host reads the "Address to a Haggis", an ode that Robert Burns wrote to the Scottish dish, at the end of which the haggis is ceremonially sliced into two pieces and the meal begins.

Imbolc & Candlemas

Imbolc is one of the four principal festivals of the Irish calendar, celebrated among Gaelic peoples and some other Celtic cultures, halfway between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Originally dedicated to the goddess Brigid, in the Christian period it was adopted as St Brigid's Day. Traditionally a time of weather prognostication, and the old tradition of watching to see if serpents or badgers came from their winter dens is perhaps a precursor to the North American Groundhog Day. Candlemas is another traditional celebration on this date.

St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patty's Day! Green clothing, ribbons and shamrocks are worn in celebration of St Patrick's Day since the 17th century, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day. The phrase "the wearing of the green", meaning to wear a shamrock on one's clothing, derives from a song of the same name. More can be found at www.celticmythmoon.com/ holidays.html#StPatricksDay
